/ Background
Expedify is a project developed as part of the Design for Good module in collaboration with the Royal College of Art. Design for Good is a design-focused alliance dedicated to creating measurable impact on society’s most pressing challenges, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The initiative addresses one goal every two years, with 2024 dedicated to advancing Quality Education.
Education shapes future careers, yet students are often required to make decisions while still in high school, when their knowledge of career options and pathways is limited. This can result in uncertainty and misalignment in their future career choices.

/ Research
From our research through interviews and surveys, we found that students are often required to make career decisions early, with little real understanding of what those choices involve. Most advice comes from a narrow circle of parents and teachers, reflecting outdated views and overlooking the rapidly changing job market. Access to good guidance remains unequal, shaped by background and privilege, while students lack the tools and frameworks to explore their options with confidence.
To address this, we ran a co-design workshop and discovered that career choices extend far beyond simply following passion. Students need to balance skills, values, economic realities, and self-awareness. Drawing on frameworks like Ikigai and the Hedgehog Concept, we created a more nuanced model that also considers burnout risks, energy-draining sectors, and future fears. Tested with Service Design Master’s students, the peer-to-peer format encouraged dialogue, reflection, and shared insights. The results showed that holistic, socially-supported exploration can lead to more grounded and meaningful career decisions.

/ Outcome
Our solution is Expedify, an interactive and self-driven career discovery platform powered by AI personalization. It integrates peer-to-peer professional insights with intelligent guidance to help students gain clarity about their future. Expedify is co-owned by its community, including students, schools, universities, education providers, and mentors. This structure ensures shared governance, ethical use of AI, and long-term sustainability.
